Why I’m Finally Putting Down the Controller (Sometimes)
Why I’m Finally Putting Down the Controller (Sometimes)
I was digging through a stack of old notebooks last night—you know, the ones from like 5th or 6th grade where the handwriting is absolute trash? Anyway, I found this old essay I wrote called "The Importance of Games and Sports."
It’s funny because back then, I probably just copied it from a textbook to get an A, but reading it now... man, kid-me was actually onto something. We spend so much time staring at our phones (guilty as charged) that we forget how to actually, like, move our bodies.
It’s Not Just About the "Gym Life"
Look, I’m not saying we all need to become Olympic athletes or spend 3 hours at the gym lifting heavy circles. That sounds exhausting. But there’s a huge difference between "exercising" and just playing.
When you’re playing a game of football (the goat of all sports, don't fight me on this) or even just a messy game of badminton in the backyard, you don't notice you're working out. You're just trying not to lose to your annoying cousin.
A few reasons why it actually matters:
The Sleep Factor: Seriously, if I play a real match on Saturday, I sleep like a rock. No tossing and turning thinking about that cringe thing I said in 2019.
Brain Mush: You know that feeling when you've been scrolling TikTok for three hours and your brain feels like wet bread? A quick game of basketball or even just a long walk outside fixes that instantly.
Teamwork (even if people are annoying): Sports force you to deal with people. You learn how to win without being a jerk and how to lose without breaking things. It’s a "life skill" or whatever.
Why Outside is Better Than Inside
I know, I know—the graphics in FC 25 or NBA 2K are insane. But they don't give you Vitamin D. My old school notes mentioned that outdoor games help you "connect with nature," which sounds a bit hippy-dippy, but it’s true.
There is something about the fresh air and the sun (when it’s not 100 degrees out) that just resets your mood. Plus, it gives your eyes a break from the blue light. My eye doctor would probably be proud of me for even writing this.
My Personal Fav: Football
If I had to pick one, it’s football. It’s popular for a reason! It’s fast, it’s intense, and it keeps you fit without feeling like a chore. But honestly? It doesn't matter what it is. Cricket, Tag, Capture the Flag—just do something that makes you sweat a little bit.
Final Thoughts
I think the biggest takeaway from my old messy handwriting is that "all work and no play makes John a dull boy." We get so caught up in "grinding" or "hustling" or just being lazy that we lose that spark.
So, yeah. I’m gonna go try to find my old football boots. I think they’re in the back of the closet under a pile of hoodies. If I don't post for a week, it’s probably because I pulled a muscle lol.
